Joint compound application tools

In such a position, the valve 19 is opened and joint compound is discharged through the ports As the joint compound is discharged, the tool is moved along the corner as indicated by the arrow 48 in FIG. The joint compound is troweled by the leading edges 30 , The saw-toothed sections 33 , 34 on the leading edges form grooves in the applied joint compound which leads to better adherence of the subsequently applied finishing product.

The end tooth 36 fills gaps in the seam of corner 14 following construction. Drywall joint compound applicator tool. United States Patent A tool for the application of joint compound to a corner joint formed at the intersection of two drywall panels during new construction, preparatory to finishing the corner. The corner can have an obtuse angle. The tool has a generally flat top surface with leading edges that converge toward an apex. A housing on the top surface is in spaced relationship from the leading edges and includes a chamber for receipt of joint compound from a pressurized source.

The housing has discharge ports that are forwardly directed. In use the head is positioned in the corner and tilted in the direction so that the discharge ports face the corner. The head is tilted to an extent as may be necessary to cause the leading edges to engage the adjacent walls forming the corner. In this position, the head is drawn along the corner as the joint compound is discharged into the corner vicinity and is troweled by the leading edges.

The applicator of claim 1 including: a saw-toothed edge on the first and second leading edges. The applicator tool of claim 1 wherein: said tool body includes a flexible hose segment and a spring connected to the hose segment tending to return the hose segment from a deflected position to an un-deflected position.

The applicator tool of claim 3 wherein: said spring is a coil spring wrapped around the hose segment. The applicator tool of claim 4 including: a saw-toothed edge on the first and second leading edges. The applicator tool of claim 1 wherein: the base has a diamond-shaped forward section. The applicator tool of claim 6 including: a saw-toothed edge on the first and second leading edges.

The applicator tool of claim 7 wherein: said base includes a flat bottom wall. The applicator tool of claim 8 wherein: said tool body includes a flexible hose segment and a spring connected to the hose segment tending to return the hose segment from a deflected position to an un-deflected position.

The applicator tool of claim 9 wherein: said spring is a coil spring wrapped around the hose segment. The applicator tool of claim 6 wherein: the base has a straight trailing section connected to the diamond-shaped forward section.

You should apply joint compound as thin as possible as applying a thick layer will cause it to shrink and crack. So lay it evenly using thin layers. Consider applying a small amount of joint compound into the seam if the gap between the 2 sections of sheetrock is somewhat pronounced. To accomplish this, scoop a small amount of compound with the edge of the drywall knife. Work the compound into the seam gently, and then use the knife blade to smooth the area even with the surface of the wall.

Using only a small amount of the compound will minimize the need to clean the area before moving on to apply the drywall tape. Cut and apply the drywall tape to the seam.

Gently but firmly press the tape into position over the seam, making sure that it adheres to the wall. Apply the joint compound. Feather the product over the seam so that the layer is thin but sufficient to cover the face of the tape. Feathering is accomplished by making light strokes that move downward and to each side in a steady manner. Once a section is covered, apply additional compound to the next exposed area, and repeat the process until the seam and tape are completely covered.

Allow the joint compound to dry. Depending on the brand involved, this may take up to 12 hours. If the tape is exposed as the result of the sanding, apply a second coat of compound and allow it to dry. Then sand again until the wall is as smooth as possible.
