Philosopher-politician Gianni Vattimo is one of those typically Italian intellectual chameleons who regularly take on a new color and lead a prominent public life. At the time he wrote this booklet in the early s, he was known as a left-wing radical, oscillating between postmodernism and anarchism, while in his youth he was a very committed Catholic.

With a title like "Belief" in my Dutch edition the title is more correctly translated: 'I believe that I believe", he suggests a spectacular turnaround. But those who read the book carefully will notice that it is all a bit more nuanced than "atheist returns to the sheep stable of the church". Vattimo certainly has interesting things to say, although they are not always particularly original.
For example, he defends the claim that Western secularization is a logical consequence of Christianity, with the meanwhile classical reference that Christianity itself contains the seeds of an enchantment of the world.
Vattimo also refers to his own philosophical-political concept of "weak thinking". This is a thinking that offers a counterweight to a metaphysics that is based on absolutistic rationalistism and has led to a violent way of "strong thinking" that has proved disastrous for the world. It is therefore not surprising that Vattimo himself quotes this personal shift as a rediscovery of his childhood beliefs.
But at the same time he makes it clear that it is not a return to the church, certainly not to the institution under the then authoritarian leadership of the Pole Wojtyla, with its rigid sexual morality and its absolute image of God; and that is understandable, because this dogmatism is a striking example of "strong thinking".
Then of course the question remains what message Vattimo actually wants to convey, and that rather is an issue. All the more because this booklet is drowning in a technical philosophical discourse, and is certainly not an easily readable leaflet. The only thing you can see is that Vattimo sticks to that message of charity, and recommends a previously Protestant-inspired personal reading of the Gospels, supplemented with an interpretation of "the signs of the time," another classic.
That all sounds very superficial. It seems to me that the man Gianni Vattimo has gone through an emotional-nostalgic crisis here at a slightly later age and takes refuge back in his youth. Yet, secularization even if it supposedly is "issued" from this event is predicated on the denial of such an event.
The minute the "weakness of God" becomes merely a "metaphor" for secularization, it undermines itself. Okay, he says, in passim, he does not develop any detailed argument concerning why he hopes to believe a post modern return of religion viz.
Christianity; but I take it "Catholicocentricism". But, in fact, he does provide no argument at all. Nov 08, Katrinka rated it really liked it. Well worth the read. Mar 16, Sam added it. Menos mal que nadie, ni en la izquierda ni en la derecha, hace caso a Vattimo. Ik vond het nogal lastig om m'n kop erbij te houden, wat het lastig maakt om een gedegen oordeel te kunnen vellen. Honest, realistic and compelling. Secolarizzazione Nietzsche e Heidegger hanno descritto la fine della metafisica che Vattimo chiama indebolimento degli enti forti o indebolimento dell'essere, o anche secolarizzazione.
